This Will Make iPod Shuffle Irrelevant

I have been a big fan of the iPod Shuffle, as well as the full blown iPod. That being said, we are always looking for a way to consolidate our gadgets into one multi-pupose device. Enter the Sony Ericsson W800 Walkman Phone.

This phone comes with many of the features that your favorite cellphone would have, including Bluetooth capability, multi-network access, and a 2.0 megapixel camera. What makes this yet-to-be-released phone special is the fact that it doubles as an MP3 player, with a minimum of 512 MB of capacity for storing MP3's. There is no doubt that the memory will be on Sony's proprietary Memory Stick format, but the fact that it's expandable to 1GB and promises to include cd ripping software makes this THE gadget to get in 2005. Sony's entire goal with this device is to make it "easy" to get your music into your phone so that you can take it with you. Because of this, they will not make the user jump through hoops by making you convert your MP3's to ATRAC files, Sony's proprietary format.

Upon reading over the specs of this phone, I came to this conclusion: Once I have this phone, I will no longer need my iPod Shuffle. The Shuffle is a VERY cool device (see previous posts) which is an exceptional MP3 player, and allows easy filling of songs using iTunes software. Although iTunes will not be compatible with this phone, the fact that I will be able to basically carry two devices in one (phone and MP3 player) will make the Shuffle obsolete for me. I can carry my essential 120-240 songs with me on my cell phone. If I need more than that, I have my 2G iPod which has a 10GB drive, and many more songs for extended listening.

Since most of us need our cell phone on us at all times, a phone which adequately doubles as an MP3 player seems to be a natural. Of course, this is all based on my reading of the specs and gauging how this will play out. I will post a full review once I am able to obtain one of these seemingly excellent items. Until then, I love my iPod Shuffle, and will continue to wear it around my neck until I can get my hands on this phone.

Hi Brett. Nice Blog. I don't want a gmail address but thanks anyway.

Hey, this phone is cool but I prefer my Audiovox SMT-5600 (it also goes by 4 different names, most popular being the iMate SP3 (search that on ebay, just make sure you get the worldwide or u.s. model and then you can sign up with Cingular $20/mo unlimited internet in L.A.)). I have 1gb removable mini-sd memory (not sony specific!) with about 32mb or so internal. Runs windows mobile 2003 (big whoop, but that means media player for mp3s and movies, internet radio (better than the mp3 idea late at night). It has a cam (not great; it does record video at 15fps tho). Anyways, search google or ebay for Audiovox SMT-5600 or HTC i-Mate SP3 and you'll find one. They're sharp looking too.

Take care and keep up the good work!
